Minifying JS and CSS

I am currently attempting to implement a library which takes JS and CSS files, minifies them, and writes the minified result to a file.

From what I am gathering, I am not able to do this on AppHarbor, as AppHarbor does not allow writing to the filesystem (except for App_Data). I am able to write the minified files to App_Data, but of course IIS will not serve resources from that folder.

Suggestions?

  1. Poking around some, I just saw an option that allows one to allow write access to the filesystem in an application. Must be a relatively new feature?

Anyway, I think I'll be able to work with that.

  2. Yes, you can do that, but be aware of the caveats (files not synched between multiple application instances and not persisted between deploys). We'll try and come up with a more reliable solution.

  5. I'm using Squishit (Justin Etheredge's bundling library), which creates bundles on the fly if they don't already exist. That being the case, lack of persistance between deplays should not be a big issue, as the first post-deploy page hit will take care of that.

Files not being synched between multiple application instances could be an issue... I'm not sure. Probably not, as long as each instance only reads from / writes to its own instance?

  6. I think you're just fine using Squishit (but we'd still like to see whether we can come up with something better).

  7. Thanks... agreed, hopefully something better can be arranged. Keep up the good work!
