.config transformations

Hey guys

There are many discussion about this but I don't have a clear picture yet so am starting a new one.

I would like to have 3 environments: dev, stage and live. For each I would like to define a transform. Appharbor supports transforms but its not clear how I can specify which application should use which transform. Basically where can I specify the equivalent of this:

msbuild "path to project file" /T:TransformWebConfig /P:Configuration=stage

Thanks
Jaspreet

  1. From the FAQ about Managing Environments

"Configuration file transformation is support on all .config files that has a corresponding .config.release file. We'll run the configuration file transformation as part of the build process."

Are you saying here that if I have a transformation called "release", and its corresponding web.release.config file, that will be used while deploying?

What if I have other transformations?

    Thanks

  2. We currently only support transforming using the transform stored in the .release file.

Here's a blog-post on using configuration variables to enable a staging app configuration.

Let us know if this is not a satisfactory solution for you.

  3. That's a very useful workaround, and will work for now. Thanks for that.

In the long run it will be great if as a part of the application definition, we can specify the configuration transform to use (or maybe it can just be a config variable with a specific name).

    Thanks again!

  4. Thanks for the feedback, we'll definitely consider making configuration transforms configurable in the future!

    Best,
    Rune
